01. Definition of Terms
Zipper
A connector consisting of two pieces of engaged flexible teeth chain tapes and other components like sliders which can separate and combine the tapes repeatedly.
Teeth
A given shape of teeth processed by metal, plastic and other materials.
Teeth Chain
Forming chain of teeth arranged in a sequence.
Zipper Specifications
The width of jointed chain.
Slider
The moving component that can make the teeth opened and closed.
Top Stop
A stop component fixed on the teeth chain tapes to prevent the slider separating from the chain.
Bottom Stop
A stop component fixed on the chain tapes to prevent the slider separating from the chain and the tapes cannot be separated completely.
Tape
A flexible woven made of cotton, chemical fiber or polyester which can support the teeth.
Auto-lock Slider
Slider with a locking mechanism inside the body of the slider. This keeps the slider from moving on the zipper until the puller is grabbed and the locking mechanism is released. The lock automatically locks when no force is placed on the pull tab. In the semi-automatic slider, it locks only when the pull tab is lowered.
Closed-end Zipper
When opening zipper, the tapes on both sides can not be completely separated.
Open-end Zipper
When opening zipper, the tapes on both sides can be completely separated.
Two Way open-end Zipper
Open-end zipper with 2 sliders. When the 2 sliders are on the same bottom end of the zipper, one of the pins can be pulled off from each other, or inserting a pin into them can close the zipper.
Finished Zipper
Zipper to be packed, stored & sold in unit of piece.
Chain Zipper
Long chain zipper to be packed, stored & sold in unit of length.
01. Tips for selecting the zipper
Different zipper suits different conditions,hence when buying zippers the following matters should be pointed out to the manufacturer:1,Where will the zipper be used (such as leather trund,footwear,jacket,raincoat,tent,jeans needing hard washing and leather products with high acidity) or other special requirements , 2. Requirements for the content of zipper:does not need containing AZO or nickel pass needle detector.
02. Washing
Q: What issues should be noticed during the garment washing?
A: (1) During the washing process, the zipper should be closed in order to prevent teeth and fabric damage.
(2) The sliders should be stabilized and well protected before washing process in order to prevent the damage on the apperence, such as scratching and abrading. Especially in heavy enzyme washing and heavy enzyme stone washing, the apperence will be damaged easily if the puller is heavy or irregular shape. The damage on the sliders which are hanged electroplated or painted will be much more obvious.
03. Allowable tolerance of zipper length
Due to the interact caused by the speed of machine operation during the manufacturing of zipper as well as the completeness of the teeth,there will appear allowable tolerance.The longer the zipper is the giger the allowable tolerance will be.
Attached as follows is the table of errors for Germany and Japanese YKK.

04. Metal Zipper and Components
Q:Can elastic band containing sulfides be used to tie up the metal zippers for a long time?
A: It cannot be used because of the chemical reaction between sulfide and the metal zipper. The zipper teeth will turn into black color after the reaction.
Q: What kind of problems may occur if metal zippers are used with leather or wool products?
A: The metal zipper may be discolored because of the chemical reaction with bleach/acid-base class which usually remains on leather or wool products after processing.
